KIDNEY STONES - HOME REMEDIES

KIDNEY STONES - HOME REMEDIES

Kidney stones develop when the concentration of minerals in the urine like calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, uric acid oxalate  or  xanthine becomes too high thus resulting in a build-up of their crystals (which are normally flushed out of the system during urination) in the urinary tract. The signs and symptoms differ
according to the size, shape, consistency and position of the stone and there can be cases where the renal calculi may be present for years together without giving rise to any kind of symptoms  or  signs. But more commonly, the stone formation can lead to an obstruction in the flow of urine and the patient may complain of pain in the back  or  the loin, which radiates round the flank to the groin and sometimes into the testis and  is increased by any kind of movement. The patient also complains of a frequent desire to urinate, painful and scanty urination, nausea and vomiting, fever and occasionally red cells, white cells, proteins, sand or deposits in the urine. This is usually more common in males than females and heredity and a sedentary lifestyle plays an important causative factor. The person is asked to take strict bed rest and an application of warmth to the painful area is advised. The patient is advised to increase the consumption of water and other fluids, which helps in increasing the production of urine and thus help in flushing out of the stone and the bacteria.

HOME REMEDIES
1. Avoid excessive intake of calcium  or  oxalate  or  proteins in your diet (i.e. avoid  beef, cabbage, cashew nuts, cauliflower, cheese, chickoo, chocolate, cocoa, coffee, custard apple, eggs, figs, gelatin, herring, khus khus, kidney, liver, milk and milk products, molasses, paneer, pear, salmon, sardine, spinach, strawberries, tomatoes, yeast, etc.).

2. Avoid taking beans and pulses in any form. Yellow variety of pumpkin, colocasia and lady's fingers are to be strictly avoided. White variety of pumpkin and gourd are useful for this condition.

3. Take in more of barley (jau) water, coconut water, fruit juices, limejuice etc.

4. Imbibing four to five bottles of strong, dark beer, heated almost to simmering, is a useful remedy for kidney stones.

5. Make a decoction of kidney beans (Rajmah) and consume within twenty-four hours.

6. Remove the beans from inside the pods, then slice the pods and put about sixty grams in four liters of hot water and boil them slowly for four hours. This liquid is then strained through fine muslin and then allowed to cool for about eight hours. Then the fluid should be poured through  another piece of muslin without stirring. A glass of this decoction should be given to the patient every two hours throughout the day for one day and thereafter it may be taken several times a week.

7. A few drinks of lemon juice daily will help reduce the uric acid stones. One teaspoonful each of holy basil (tulsi) leaf juice and honey should be taken daily for six months.

8. Take two glasses of cranberry juice daily.

9. Juice of watermelon should be taken daily for fifteen to twenty days since it is rich in potassium salts and is one of the safest and the best diuretics. Watermelon seeds are also useful for renal calculi.

10. A regular intake of celery  leaves  (ajwan-ka-patta) is necessary (especially in those prone to stone formation) to prevent further stone formation.

11. Aloe vera juice helps to reduce the size of the stone.

12. The juice of the fig fruit  or a decoction made out of figs (anjeer) helps to dissolve the stones.

13. Ripe fresh apples and grapes are useful for renal calculi.

14. Pieces of sugarcane chewed frequently help the stones to melt.

15. The seeds of both sour and sweet pomegranates (anar) are a useful medicine for kidney stones. A tablespoonful of the seeds are ground to a fine paste and is given along with a cup of horse gram (kulthi) soup (two tablespoonfuls of horse gram should be used for preparing the soup) to dissolve the kidney stones.

16. Chew two to three cloves of garlic daily in the morning.

17. Chew about two to three cardamoms (elaichi) thrice daily after meals.

18. Parsley, Red Clover, Uva Ursi, Pumpkin seeds and  Watermelon seeds are useful herbal remedies for dissolving kidney stones.

19. Take half a glass of radish juice daily for fifteen to twenty days in the morning.

Remedies For Kidney Stones

Remedies For Kidney Stones
What you must know is that these stones are made up of substances like uric acid, phosphates, calcium, and oxalic acid. In most of the cases, you can not trace the obvious cause behind the formation of these stones. However, there are some signs and kidney stone symptoms that are common to all kidney stone patients.

In majority of kidney stone cases, the kidney stone enters into the urinary tract. This, then, results into intense pain which acts as a symptom. The reason why this intense pain is felt is that the stone blocks off the flow of urine and gives rise to some infection. You initially feel the pain in the side and as the problem grows the pain spreads to groin and thighs as well.

The biggest risk factor for kidney stones is dehydration.  kidney stones is caused by the accumulation of oxalate salts in the urinary bladder region of kidney . This is usually associated as the severest pain the  man have ever experienced .Drinking lot of water and the diet rich with milk is a good diet for kidney stones .

Home Remedies
1. Drink more water or fluids throughout the day to produce at least 2 litres of urine in the whole day.

2. Note that it is the amount of urine that is important, at least 2 litres of urine in the whole day.

3. Remedy using lemon juice & olive oil
Drink a mixture of 2 oz (60 ml) of lemon juice with 2 oz (60 ml) of olive oil and then a large glass of water. The stones should pass within 24 hours to give you relief. This remedy for kidney stones has worked for many.

4. Remedy using coconut water
Drinking coconut water regularly can break up the stones and make them easier to pass out.

5. A daily glass of orange juice can help prevent the recurrence of kidney stones better than other citrus fruit juices such as lemonade. A glass of orange juice a day may keep kidney stones at bay.

6. Remedy using onions
Take 2 medium size onions in 1 glass of water and cook over medium heat. When it cools down, blend in a blender. Strain and drink the juice for 3 days. You will start passing the stones from the second day. This remedy has worked for many.

7. Drink plenty of fluids, only this helps in the long run to flush out the stones if they are small. For stones of larger size, nowadays laser treatment is done.

8. Tiredness and Energy loss:
Take a blanced diet of nuts like almond, dry grapes. Take a pinch of saffron and mix in warm milk and consume every day Powder dried ginger and Turmeric and mix with a glass of milk.

9. Eat all the fresh cherries and water melon you can for at least three days. Drink all the steam distilled water you desire, but eat only fresh, ripe cherries and water melon. Unsweetened cherry juice can be used if cherries are not available.

10. Most kidney stones can pass through the urinary system on their own. Drinking plenty of water (2 to 3) quarts a day) helps move a stone through the urinary system more quickly. Urologists usually ask their patients to save passed stone(s) for testing. The testing helps discover the chemical make-up of the stone and other information needed to decide how to prevent recurrence (stop more stones from forming). You can catch the stone in a cup or tea strainer used only for catching urine samples.

11. Coke and asparagus
The phosphoric acid in Coke helps break down the stones and the asparagus acts as a diuretic to flush out the tiny crystals. The pH change produced by the Coke causes increased hydrogen ion secretion in the nephons of the kidney.

12. Add ¼ cup of dried Hydrangia Root, Gravel Root (Queen of the Meadow) and Uva Ursi Leaves to a quart of water. These generally come in small pieces- already chopped up. If you happen to get them whole, chop them up before you add them to the water. Bring the water to a boil, and continue to boil for 20 more minutes. Allow to cool a little, then drain and drink a half cup three times daily until gone.

13. Coconut water is a good home remedy for burning urination and scanty urine. Regular intake also flushes out small particles of dissolved stones through urination.

14. Barley water can also be used for this purpose.

15. Water melon contains good amount of water, and is also rich in potassium salts. It is a nutritive as well as a safe diuretic to be used in this condition .

Diet, not surgery, for kidney stones

Diet, not surgery, for kidney stones

A majority of patients suffering from kidney stones can be treated successfully by proper dietary regulations. These regulations will also prevent a recurrence of the symptoms. Only a few cases require surgery.

The patient should avoid foods which irritate the kidneys, to control acidity or alkalinity of the urine and to ensure adequate intake of fluids to prevent the urine from becoming concentrated.  The foods considered irritants to the kidneys are alcoholic beverages, condiments, pickles,  certain vegetables like cucumbers, radishes, tomatoes, spinach, rhubarb, water-cress and  those with strong aroma such as asparagus, onions, beans, cabbage and cauliflower, meat, gravies, and carbonated waters.

How to prevent kidney stones ?

How to prevent kidney stones ?
What are kidney stones?
Kidney stones are gravel-like collections of chemicals that may appear in any area of the urinary system, from the kidney to the bladder. They may be small or large. You may have just one stone or many. Your kidneys filter your blood and excrete waste products and excess water as urine. They are located on either side of your spine, just above your waist. Kidney stones are most common in middle-aged people and are 3 times more common in men than in women. They tend to recur.

The most common type of kidney stones result from too much calcium and oxalate in the urine. These minerals bind together as crystals, forming stones. The following dietary guidelines can help to prevent kidney stones.

1. Drink plenty of fluid

Drink more fluid, especially water

Drinking water helps to flush out the kidneys and dilute stone-forming substances, making stones less likely to form.

Drink at least 2- 3 litres, or 10 cups, of fluid daily. At least half of this should be water (soda, mineral, spring or plain tap water).

Have a cup of fluid (250mL) each hour during waking hours, and a large glass of water before going to bed. Drink a glass of water if you wake up during the night.

Spread out your fluid intake during the day.

AVOID strong black tea and orange juice, as these are high in oxalates.

Avoid grape fruit juice, cranberry juice (if more than 500ml/day) and sugary drinks. Drinking large amounts of sugary drinks (softdrink, cordial) can lead to weight gain. Choose diet or low joule drinks to limit weight gain.

Lemon juice is a good source of citrate which helps to prevent stones forming. Drink 100ml of lemon juice daily (could be added to water).

2.  Limit salt

Salt (sodium) increases the amount of calcium in your urine. Limit sodium intake to less than 2300mg per day

To reduce salt /sodium: buy fresh foods, or foods without salt - fruit, fresh vegetables, fresh meats, chicken, fish, eggs, porridge, rice, pasta

Most sodium (75%) comes from processed foods. Limit processed foods high in salt e.g. soup, Bonox, processed meats, sauces, gravy, crisps and snack foods.

“low salt” or “no added salt” foods are the best choices. Look for a sodium content less than 150 mg per serve as a guideline. Note that some “reduced salt” products can still contain high levels of sodium.

do not add salt at the table or in cooking.

What can I use instead?

freshly ground pepper, dry mustard powder

lemon juice, lime juice, vinegar

a sprinkle of dried herbs or chopped fresh herbs

garlic, curry, chilli, onion, fresh ginger, spring onions

3. Limit foods high in oxalate

Reducing  oxalate  in your diet helps to reduce the amount of oxalate in your urine.
Limit intake of :

rhubarb, spinach, silverbeet, beetroot, eggplant, sweet potato, celery, leeks

nuts, peanut paste

strong black tea, orange juice

chocolate

wheat bran and wheat germ

berries (eg strawberries, blackberries), dried figs

4. Include adequate calcium in your diet

Dietary calcium is important for your bones and teeth. Adequate dietary calcium intake is recommended.

Include at least 2-3 choices daily from the following list:

250mL milk (eg Trim, skim, full cream, calcium-fortified soy milk)

200mL high calcium milk eg Physical

200g (small tub) yoghurt

40g cheese (2 slices)

3 scoops ice cream

5. Include only a moderate amount of animal protein

Limit protein from  meat, seafood, fish, chicken, eggs  to a moderate serve (120 -150g) daily (cooked) (note 60g meat = 2 eggs).

6. Vitamin supplements

Do not take  Vitamin C supplements (also known as ascorbic acid, calcium ascorbate).

Do not take  Vitamin D supplements  or cod liver oil.

7. Choose wholemeal and wholegrain foods

Eating foods higher in fibre can decrease the risk of stone formation by reducing the amount of calcium and oxalate you absorb

Choose wholemeal and wholegrain breads, flour, cereals, pasta, biscuits and crackers

8. Increase fruit and vegetable intake.

Any oedema or water retention, whether in the lungs, arms or abdomen also requires the strengthening of kidneys with this recipe.

Kidney cleanse is a procedure that is used to cleanse the kidneys from within, by removing deeply embedded toxic wastes from the blood and kidneys.  Kidney cleansing also dissolves kidney stones and passes them through urine in microscopically dissolved form. dried and preserved.

When toxins are accumulated in the body and the kidneys cannot filter out all of them, they are circulated in the blood stream.  To decrease the ill-effects of these toxins, the body tends to keep them in a diluted form and hence, it retains more water.  When the level of water in the blood stream increases, it results in a condition known as oedema. This also results in increased body weight. When these toxins are expelled during kidney cleanse, the extra water retained in the blood stream is also released.  Expect increased urination. Hence, there is the added benefit of weight loss, as a result of kidney cleanse.
