Pregnancy Care II

Pregnancy Care II

1. REGIME: The mother should take utmost care during pregnancy as the delicate fetus lies within her stomach. Climbing stairs, repeated bending as well as sitting in difficult postures should be avoided. Jerks can also be harmful and so a pregnant mother should avoid traveling in rickshaws, carriages and two wheeler. It is a wrong conception that a pregnant lady should be taking rest all the time. She has to, like normal times, wake up early and do a little bit of work, take a walk especially two to three hours after lunch  or in the evening. The pregnant woman must wear clothes that are loose and comfortable and which do not exert any kind of pressure on any part of her body.

2. MENTAL STATE: The expectant mother should always be in a healthy state of mind. This is because the negative emotions (like fear, apprehension, worries, grief, anxiety, irritability, etc.) affect not only her own health but also the health of the fetus. During severe depression in the pregnant mother, there is markedly reduced motility of the fetus and sometimes an extension of the gestational age. So an atmosphere of joy
and gaiety should be maintained for the pregnant woman as far as possible. She should spend more time in hobbies like reading good old time stories, knitting, painting, listening to good music, meditating, etc. and should also go for gentle walks and do plenty of mild, non-vigorous exercises.

3. THINGS TO AVOID: Smoking, drinking alcohol and taking any drugs or medications without her doctor's advice is to be strictly avoided. The pregnant woman should avoid undergoing any X-ray, including the dental ones, since they are known to contribute to the development of cancer, not only in the mother, but also in the children in the later years. Also she should avoid any oil massages. The mother-to-be is also advised to avoid excessive use of salt, refined sugar, harmful spices (like white vinegar, black and white pepper and mustard), coffee, tea, chocolate, soft drinks and food products made from white flour.

4. LABOR:  It is a process through which the product of conception is expelled from the uterus into the outside world. Labor is often preceded by agitation, nervous trembling, lowness of spirits, weepy disposition, etc. The patient may complain of loose stools a day or two before labor, which should not be interfered with. There are intense pains in the abdomen that are associated with passage of water and a slight discharge of reddish mucus called as a "show" that helps further the process of labor. The process of labor may be protracted in women in their first confinement.

Natural childbirth at home or in any familiar surrounding under the assistance of a registered medical practitioner is by far the most effective to help ease the mother during labor. When the expectant mother complains of labor pain, ask her to drink plenty of fluids, urinate at least once every hour or two, apply hot compresses on the lower abdomen to ease the pain, keep taking deep breaths and try to relax. Ask the expectant father to stay by his wife all the time. After delivery the mother should be kept perfectly quiet, both in body and mind and loud noise, strong odors and anything that can excitement her should be avoided. The discharges that take place after confinement are called as "lochia" and they tend to vary from person to person. In some it can be thin and scanty whereas in others it may be profuse and can continue for several weeks. The discharge is initially red in color, but gradually grows lighter, becoming yellowish and then whitish and then it completely ceases. In cases where the discharge continues for too long or is too profuse or if suppressed suddenly, medical assistance is required.

Healing Power of Colours Part II

Healing Power of Colours Part II
The action and effect of various colours on the body and their healing qualities are as follows :
Red :
Symbolic of heat, fire and anger. It is a stimulating and energising colour. It stimulates arterial blood and brings warmth to cool extremities. Used as a general tonic, it is very valuable in the treatment of diseases like low blood pressure, rheumatism, paralysis, anaemia and advanced cases of tuber- culosis.
Orange :
Symbolic of prosperity and pride, orange is useful for stimulating blood supply and energising the nerves. It is beneficial in the treatment of kidney and gall stones, hernia and appendicitis. It is also used to stimulate the milk producing action of breasts after childbirth.
Violet :
Violet is beneficial in the treatment of nervous and emotional disturbances, arthritis, acute cases of consumption and insomnia.
Yellow :
Associated with joy and happiness, yellow is laxative and diuretic. It is a stimulant to the brain, the liver and the spleen. It is also effective in the treatment of diabetes, indigestion, kidney and liver disorders, constipation, eye and throat infections, syphillis and impotence.
Purple :
Purple or indigo combines the blood-warming red and the cooling antiseptic blue. It is an excellent stimulant without being an irritant. It is beneficial in the treatment of advanced stages of constipation, hydrocle , leucorrhoea, many disorders of the stomach and womb , cataract , migraine and skin disorders. It exerts a soothing effect on the eyes, ears and the nervous system.
Green :
Made up of the blue and yellow, green is regarded as a colour of harmony. It is a mild sedative. It is useful in the treatment of nervous conditions, hay fever, ulcers, influenza, malaria , colds, sexual disorders and cancer. It preserves and strengthens eyesight. Being highly medicinal and depressive, it is of great help in the treatment of inflammatory conditions.
Blue :
Cool, soothing and sedative, blue alleviates pain, reducing bleeding and heals burns. It is beneficial in the treatment of dysentery, colic, asthma, respiratory disorders, high blood pressure and skin aberrations. IN a study at the New England State Hospital in the United States, 25 members of staff with normal blood pressure were bathed in blue light for half an hour. It resulted in universal fall in blood pressure. The blood pressure rose when red light was applied.

Methods of Treatment
There are two methods of treating diseases by colour :
By the application of light through different coloured glasses ; and i.  By external or internal use of colour-charged water. In the first method , sheets of glass, 30 cms. X 36 cms. of the required colours are needed. These are placed at the window frames or any other convenient place in such a way that the sun’s rays can pass through them and fall directly on the patient’s body. The usual duration of the colour treatment is 30 minutes. In case of local application, a pane of glass can be placed in front of the diseased part so that the light passing through the glass falls on the afflicted area. At night lanterns can be used for the purpose. A single lantern can have glass panes of four different colours and the required colour can be focussed on the patient or the affected parts.

In the second method, coloured bottles are needed. These bottles should be cleaned and filled up to three-fourths level with fresh well water, distilled water or rain water. The bottles should be corked and then placed in bright sunlight for three to four hours. After this exposure, the water is said to acquire medicinal properties and this colour charged water can be used both internally and for external applications. Wounds and ulcers can be washed with this water and it can also be used to massage the affected parts or applied as compress on them. For internal use, an adult can take 30 ml. of colour-charged water as a single dose. The dose can be repeated as required.
ii.

Diet
A correct and balanced diet is essential during the treatment of diseases through chromotherapy. The patients should take food items with analogous colouring. The various colours contained in different food items are :
Red : Beets, radish, red cabbage, tomatoes, watercress, most red-skinned fruits, red berries and water melon.
Orange : Orange-skinned vegetables and fruits such as carrot, orange, apricot, mango, peach and pappaya.
Violet : Egg plant, berries, black carrot and purple grapes.
Yellow : Lime and lemon, sweet lime, grapes, pumpkin, melon, banana, mango, yellow apple and guava.
Purple : Foods having both blue and violet colouring.
Green : Most of the green vegetables and fruits such as gourds, spinach, plantain, lettuce, pea, green mango, gooseberry, pears, beans , etc.
Blue : Blue plum, blue beans, blue grapes, etc.

Contraindications
There are some important contraindications to colour treatment which should be borne in mind while adopting this mode of cure. For instance, the red colour would be injurious in a naturally inflammatory condition of the system, and in case of persons with feverish and excitable temperament. If the red light is employed for too long and frequently, it may produce dangerous fevers. The danger can be obviated by using the red light for a few minutes at a time or by placing a wet bandage over the head.

Similarly, yellow should not be used when the nerves are very active or irritable. Yellow or orange reddish tones may prove injurious in fevers, acute inflammations, delirium, diarrhoea, neuralgia, palpitation of the heart and any condition of over excitement. In cases of paralysis, chronic rheumatism, gout, consumption and in all cold, pale and dormant conditions of the system, blue, indigo and violet may prove too cooling and constricting and should be avoided.

Type II diabetes

Type II diabetes
Low-fat vegetarian diet is ideal for diabetics.
Low-fat, vegetarian diets are ideal for people with diabetes and for Indians who are topping the charts with the highest incidence of Type 2 diabetes in the world, it would be a good idea to stay with the traditional Indian diet, remain fit and keep diabetes at bay.

According to a new study conducted and published by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine along with George Washington University and the University of Toronto, a low-fat, unrefined, vegan diet (excluding all animal products) is ideal for people with Type 2 diabetes.

“The diet appears remarkably effective and all the side effects are good ones especially weight loss and lower cholesterol levels. This study we hope will rekindle interest in using diet changes first, rather than prescription drugs,” said Neal D. Barnard, lead researcher of the study now in India to talk about his research.

Dr. Barnard is also president of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, a non-government organisation that promotes preventive medicine, especially good nutrition.

“The number of people with Type 2 diabetes in India has more than doubled since 1995 largely because of changing eating habits. A low-fat vegan diet could reverse this trend,” said Dr. Barnard, who delivered a lecture at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences here on Tuesday.
Blood sugar levels

Dr. Barnard spoke about his research work which was funded by the U.S.-based National Institutes of Health and indicated that a dairy-free vegan diet can help many patients cut their blood sugar levels, improve their insulin sensitivity and reduce if not eliminate their medications. The study was published in “Diabetes Care”, a journal of the American Diabetes Association.

Type 2 diabetes usually does not occur until adulthood. In this form of the disease there may be plenty of insulin in the bloodstream but the cells are resistant to it. Glucose cannot easily get into the cells and it backs up in the bloodstream.

“The new study shows that in people with diabetes a low-fat vegan diet reduces blood sugar to a greater degree than even common oral diabetes medications. Type 2 diabetes can cause heart disease, kidney failure, stroke, nervous system damage, vision loss and other serious life-threatening complications. Rather than compensate for malfunctioning insulin, like other treatments our diet actually helps an individual’s own insulin work better by altering what goes on inside that person’s cell,” said Dr. Barnard.
“I see India as a key player in combating the global diabetes epidemic. A tradition northern Indian diet which is vegetarian, has minimal use of cooking oils and has a variety of food stuff is the best for human use,” added Dr. Barnard.
