Lowering Your High Cholesterol?

Lowering Your High Cholesterol?

Too much cholesterol in the blood can lead to heart disease and stroke America’s No. 1 and No. 4 killers. You can reduce your cholesterol by eating healthful foods, losing weight if you need to and being physically active. Some people also need to take medicine because changing their diet isn’t enough. Your doctor and nurses will help you set up a plan for reducing your cholesterol and keeping yourself healthy!

Most heart and blood vessel disease is caused by a buildup of cholesterol, plaque and other fatty deposits in artery walls. The arteries that feed the heart can become so clogged that the blood flow is reduced, causing chest pain. If a blood clot forms and blocks the artery, a heart attack can occur. Similarly, if a blood clot blocks an artery leading to or in the brain, a stroke results.

What should I eat?
1. Focus on low-saturated-fat, trans fat-free, low-cholesterol foods such as these:

2. A variety of deeply colored fruits and vegetables (4 to 5 servings of each per day)

3. A variety of fiber-rich grain products like whole grain bread, cereal, pasta and brown rice. (6 to 8 servings per day with at least half of the servings whole grains)

4. Fat-free, 1 percent and low-fat milk products (2 to 3 servings per day)

5. Lean meats and poultry without skin (choose up to 5 to 6 total ounces per day)

6. Fatty fish (enjoy at least 2 servings baked or grilled each week)

7. Nuts, seeds, and legumes (dried beans or peas) in limited amounts (4 to 5 servings per week).\

8. Unsaturated vegetable oils like canola, corn, olive, safflower and soybean oils (but a limited amount of tub or liquid unsalted margarines and spreads made from them)

What should I limit?
1. Whole milk, cream and ice cream
2. Butter, egg yolks and cheese and foods made with them
3. Organ meats like liver, sweetbreads, kidney and brain
4. High-fat processed meats like sausage, bologna, salami and hot dogs
5. Fatty meats that aren’t trimmed
6. Duck and goose meat (raised for market)
7. Bakery goods made with egg yolks, saturated fats and trans fats.
8. Saturated oils like coconut oil, palm oil and palm kernel oil
9. Solid fats like shortening, partially hydrogenated margarine and lard
10. Fried foods

Excercise
a. Aerobic exercises are probably the best approach to lowering cholesterol.  Walking, cycling or swimming are good examples of aerobic exercise.

b. Your goal should be to exercise at least 4 days per week for cardiovascular benefit, 6 days per week if desiring weight loss.

c. Measure your pulse rate (if possible) before, during (midway), and after exercise.  The pulse can be found near your wrist (thumb side, called radial pulse) or on the neck (carotid).  Count the number of pulses in 15 seconds, then multiply by four (4) to give the number of pulses per minute.

d. If you choose walking as your exercise, you should gradually work up to 45 to 60 minutes per session (or per day: exercise has a cumulative effect).

How to identify your Skin Type - THE TISSUE TEST

How to identify your Skin Type - THE TISSUE TEST

THE TISSUE TEST
Wash your face with a neutral (not made for a particular skin type) soap or cleanser (such as Neutrogena for normal skin). Rinse with water. Pat try with a towel just enough to absorb moisture do not rub. Wait one hour, and then blot your entire face with one ply (or layer) of a large facial tissue. Press lightly all over your face and leave for about one minute. Then remove the paper carefully and examine it near a window or a light.
What do you see?
1. If you see oil throughout the tissue, you most likely have oily skin.
2.If you see oil only in the Tzone (across forehead, down nose and chin), you most likely have combination skin.
3. If you see very little oil throughout, you most likely have normal skin.
4. If you see no sign of oil at all, you most likely have dry skin.
5. If your skin feels irritated or slightly itchy, you most likely have sensitive skin.

You’ll need to perform this test several times a year-during spring, summer and winter because your skin changes with the seasons.

TEN WAYS TO REDUCE YOUR CRAVINGS

TEN WAYS TO REDUCE YOUR CRAVINGS

Cravings usually occur when your body lacks certain nutrients, including some important vitamins and minerals. This happens when people don't allow themselves the food they need. They will skip their breakfast and eat a tiny salad for lunch and then go home and head for the things like potato chips, burgers, sweets and chocolates. These not only have a lot of calories, but also lack the necessary nutrients; vitamins, minerals and micronutrients that our body needs on a daily basis thus making the person not only put on unnecessary weight but will also make them feel very weak, lethargic and prone to infections.

The following are a few tips as to how to reduce the tendency to develop cravings and thus automatically contribute to reducing weight. The person is asked to  avoid sugar  in all forms, since it tends to triggers unstable blood sugar levels and thus increase the cravings.

1. Suck a sour pickle when you feel a craving for sweet. It will help you to eliminate that craving.
2. Eating enough protein helps to reduce the craving. Small amounts of protein throughout the day are the single best strategy for balancing blood sugar and energy levels and to eliminate the cravings.
3. A really strong craving for sweets can be overcome by eating a peppermint followed by a glass of fruit juice or a few nibbles of a fruit, like an apple or a pear.
4. Use herbs and spices liberally for added flavor plus the blood sugar balancing effects they have. Cinnamon (tuj), cardamom (elaichi) or nutmeg (jaipher), added to yogurt or skimmed milk, will help satisfy a sweet tooth, since these spices add a sweet flavor without the calories.
5. Moderate exercises like brisk walking, swimming and aerobics tend to activate the cells. It helps to decrease the cravings by helping the cells to respond better to insulin and also helps to increase the level of free fatty acids in the blood that can be used for energy.
6. Chocolate is a rich source of magnesium, which most people lack and so develop a craving for it.  So if you crave chocolate take in more of magnesium through either supplements or its sources. Magnesium is found  especially in apples, apricots, avocados, bananas, brewer's yeast, brown rice, dairy products, figs (anjeer), garlic, green leafy vegetables, kelp, meat, nuts, peaches, seafood, sesame seeds, tofu, wheat and whole grains.
7. Keeping yourself absorbed in hobbies that you like (like stitching, gardening, painting, teaching, etc.) will make you feel good and creative and plus deviate your mind off the cravings. So the next time that you feel like reaching for a chocolate cake or a bag of chips, reach out instead for the newspaper or your knitting set.
8. Increase the intake of flaxseed, walnut and canola oil, which contains essential fatty acids. This will also help to decrease the cravings.
9. Make sure to get enough of trace minerals like zinc picolinate and chromium  picolinate, which balance the blood sugar by helping the insulin to work more effectively. So they are very useful to reduce the craving plus to reduce the weight.

IMPROVE YOUR MEMORY IN EASY STEPS

IMPROVE YOUR MEMORY IN EASY STEPS
QUESTION: Which of these statements is correct?
You can improve your memory by exercising it-that is, by memorizing poetry, important dates and so on.
You can't do anything about your memory: like height, it's inherited.
ANSWER: Neither, according to the latest psychological research.
In fact, volunteers who memorized masses of material get poorer at it as their minds became cluttered. Memory isn't a muscle; exercise doesn't make it stronger. Yet you can improve your memory. Here are seven proven ways:

#1. External memory
This refers to all physical devices that help you remember, lists, memos, diaries and alarm clocks. Many of us are either too lazy or too proud to make the best use of such help; we forget to perform a chore because we felt we didn't need to jot it down. One handy form of external memory is the deliberately misplaced object. When my wife needs to remember some chore first thing in the morning, she stands a pitcher or jar of jam at the foot of the stairs where she can't miss it on her way down to breakfast.
"What's that doing there?" she'll say. "Oh, yes!"

#2. Chunking
This means grouping several items of information into one piece that's as easy to remember as a single item. We recall an acronym like UNICEF as a single name, not as six letters. And, to cue us in to the Great Lakes, many of us use HOMES; Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie and Superior.
Psychologist Laird Cermak, author of  Improving Your Memory,  urges you to make up your own chunks. His example: For a picnic, you need milk, soda, beer, salami, bologna, liverwurst, napkins, paper cups and paper plates; if you don't have a pencil handy, that's a lot to remember. Yet you can make it easy. There are three drinks, three meats and three paper goods; use the first letter of each category -- d. m. p -- to make a word: damp (bad for picnics). Remember that, and you'll recall the categories, and then the items in each.

#3. Mediation
This means attaching the items of a list to some easily remembered "mediating" device, such as the jingle most adults use to recall the lengths of the months. "30 days hath September".
Make up your own mediators. To remember all the things to take care of when going away for a weekend I listed them: water plants, throw out spoilable food in refrigerator, turn on telephone answering machine, lower thermostat, lock windows, put out garbage, lock doors. From the first letter of each item, I made up the sentence,
"Peter Rabbit Takes Tums With Gourmet Dinners." Ridiculous, but easy to remember.

#4. Association
Visual images are one effective form of association. To remember names, think of a visual link between a person's name and some facial feature. For instance; You've just met a Mr. Clausen, who has bushy eyebrows. Think of a "Keyword" (a sound alike) for his name claws then visualize a lobster claw tearing at his eyebrows. When you try to recall his name, you see his eyebrows, then remember the claw tearing at them and aha! Clausen!
Any association can work. I remember the name of Mrs. Purdy, the woman who assigns
garden plots at a nearby preserve, by thinking; "If I don't get a garden plot, I'll be in a purty bad fix."

#5. Reliving the moment
Studies have shown that sensory impressions are associated in memory to what we're learning and later help remind us of what we learned. So if you're trying to recall a name or fact, picture the place in which you learned it, the people around you at the time, even the feeling of the seat you sat in; your chance of remembering it will be greatly increased.
And if you're trying to remember where you lost something, mentally retrace your steps. "Ah!" you may suddenly say, seeing the scene in your mind's eye. "I put the parcel on the empty chair next to me in the restaurant when the waiter handed me the menu."

#6. Mnemonic pegboards
Performers who remember scores of names called out by people in their audiences do not have unusual memories; they've previously memorized a set of words or images in which they mentally attach the names. Anyone can do it. First, memorize these 10 "pegwords" (since they rhyme with the numbers one to 10, it's easy): one- bun; two -shoe, three- tree; four- door; five- hive; six- sticks; seven- heaven; eight -gate; nine- line; ten- hen.
Now make up a list of 10 other words and number them. Link each one to the pegword with the same number by means of an image. Suppose your first word is bowl; picture a bun lying inside a bowl. If your second word is desk, picture a shoe parked on a desk. A minute should be enough for all 10.
You'll be amazed at how effortlessly and for how long you can recall the whole list.

#7. Weaving it into the web
All the above methods are useful for recalling simple lists and names. But with more complicated information, you can't merely memorize; you have to connect it to the many related items you already know. That, according to psychologists, is the best way to retrieve it later.
And now you're equipped with seven ways to increase your memory power if you can
remember what they are.

25 Surprising Ways You’re Hurting Your Heart

25 Surprising Ways You’re Hurting Your Heart

Most people know that eating healthily, getting exercise, and not smoking are excellent ways to help prevent heart disease but many may not be aware of the smaller ways they may be doing damage to their hearts every day. The following list contains 25 things that can potentially do damage to your heart, helping you stay educated, aware and ulimately keeping your heart in better shape so you can live a long and healthy life.

  1. Sitting in traffic. A German study reports that sitting in traffic can contribute to heart attacks, especially if you are already at risk for heart problems. No matter if you are driving, riding public transportation, or pedaling your bike, if you sit in traffic, your chances of having a heart attack within the one hour after your commute raises your risk by three times the rate of those not sitting in traffic.
  2. Staying in a bad marriage. Especially for women, staying in a bad marriage has shown to increase risks for heart disease. Getting a divorce also increases risks, so professionals recommend finding a good quality counselor who can teach communication skills as well as ways to manage stress and depression.
  3. Living near a lot of road traffic noise. A study in Stockholm examined heart attack patients and where they lived, attributing for other factors such as increased risk of pollution or reduced risk due to hearing impairment. The study showed that patients living in residential areas with noise above 50 decibels were 40% more likely to have a heart attack.
  4. Not taking care of your teeth. Bacteria can enter your bloodstream from your gums, then damage the blood vessels and heart. Regular brushing, flossing, and visits to your dentist can help prevent cardiac problems, such as heart attacks, before they start.
  5. Living alone. Danish researchers found that both men and women living alone suffered twice the number of heart problems as those who were living with partners or roommates. Of the 5% of women living alone, they contributed to one-third of the female deaths due to acute coronary syndrome. Among the men, 8% were living alone and contributed to two-thirds of the male deaths.
  6. Getting too little or too much sleep. Whether because of insomnia or sleep apnea, if you are spending restless nights of little sleep, then you are potentially hurting your heart. Research indicates that getting less than six hours of quality sleep a night, or even getting too much sleep, increases your risk of coronary artery disease.
  7. Being grumpy. While grumpy old men may make for humorous movies, the reality is that negativity, especially in men, can lead to an increase in coronary heart disease. A researcher at Duke University who helped work on the study recommends that men work on dealing with anger, hostility, depression, and anxiety to help prevent health concerns.
  8. Depression. Studies show that depression can increase the risk of heart failure for patients without heart disease as well as for patients with a blockage of coronary arteries. Depression has already been shown to affect the immune system, so it is wise to seek professional help if you experience depression.
  9. Not worrying about "normal" blood pressure. Dr. Arthur Agatston instructs patients who are in the high-normal blood pressure range and have other heart risks that they must still work to get their blood pressure lower. People with risks such as diabetes, high cholesterol, or being overweight can’t rest comfortably with blood pressure that may be near the high-normal range as they could still be at risk of a heart attack.
  10. Not knowing the facts. As the old saying goes, knowledge is power. If you don’t know the lifestyle and genetic contributors to diseases that can lead to heart problems, you open yourself up for trouble. Learn about heart attack risks, high cholesterol, and diabetes to better understand how to prevent problems in the future.
  11. Using artificial sweeteners. Eating something sweet sends a signal to your body to get ready to burn calories and also helps trigger feelings of fullness. Artificial sweeteners have been shown to reduce these natural triggers, thereby allowing your body to both create more fat and overeat. If you are using artificial sweeteners to lose weight for the health of your heart, then perhaps you should switch to a natural sweetener such as honey, unprocessed or less processed sugar, or agave sweetener.
  12. Using pain relievers. Vioxx was in all the news several years ago when it was discovered that it may have contributed to heart attacks and strokes. Other pain relievers may pose risks to your heart as well. Many question the safety of Celebrex, available by prescription only, and research has shown that acetaminophen usage in women, especially if used more than 21 days a month or in smokers, carry increased risks for the heart.
  13. Relying on a supposed heart-healthy diet that isn’t. With so many claims of heart-healthy diets, it can be easy to fall victim to false advertising. According to a study that examined over 50 years of research, the only diets shown conclusively to reduce the risk for heart disease are those that are vegetable-rich, include nuts rich in monounsaturated fatty acids, and Mediterranean-style diets. Western diets with processed meats, refined grains and high-fat dairy as well as high-glycemic index foods and foods high in trans-fatty acids actually promote heart disease.
  14. Shoveling snow. People with a history of heart disease or risk factors for it should not shovel snow. The heavy work in a cold environment can put too much stress on the heart, especially if you are not accustomed to getting much exercise.
  15. Taking extremely hot or cold showers or saunas after exercising. The extreme temperature change after working out can put too much stress on your heart. If you are already at risk for a heart attack, this practice is downright unsafe.
  16. Not speaking up when talking with your doctor. Many people don’t tell their doctor everything they should when they come in for a visit. The reasons can vary from being embarrassed to not feeling comfortable with the doctor to just not knowing something was important. Be sure to give your doctor the full picture so he or she will be able to help you keep your heart healthy. If you don’t feel comfortable with your doctor, then maybe it’s time to find a new physician.
  17. Living with chronic anxiety. The Journal of the American College of Cardiology reports that for those at risk for heart problems, the chances of heart attack and death increase significantly if they are living with chronic anxiety. Learn how to manage the stress in your life and seek professional help if you find you can’t reduce your stress and anxiety alone.
  18. Too many calcium supplements. It is not uncommon for post-menopausal women to take calcium supplements to help prevent against brittle bones. However, research published in the British Medical Journal shows that women taking higher levels of calcium supplements experienced greater heart problems.
  19. Feeling discrimination. Rush University Medical Center in Chicago has shown that black women who reported more feelings of being discriminated against had higher incidents of coronary artery calcification. With the many types of discrimination so widely prevalent in society, including ageism, sexism, homophobia, and racial discrimination, this study should give people reason to reconsider their relationships.
  20. Drinking soft drinks. Boston University School of Medicine released a report based on their research that indicates one soda a day, diet or regular, can contribute to many health problems which contribute to heart disease. Medical professionals recommend reducing soda intake and keeping in mind that moderation is often the best way to go.
  21. Drinking energy drinks. Energy drinks contain large amounts of caffeine and other natural stimulants that can raise blood pressure and heart rate. Even in healthy young people, two energy drinks a day have shown to raise blood pressure and heart rate by 10%. If you are at risk for heart problems, then you should avoid drinking energy drinks.
  22. Having a bad boss. A study done by Swedish researchers discovered that those working for four or more years under bosses that are "inconsiderate, opaque, uncommunicative, and poor advocates" have a 60% higher risk of heart attack or other heart condition. By contrast, those who work under bosses that demonstrate positive management styles are 40% less likely to experience heart problems.
  23. Having a low thyroid. Some researchers have discovered that having a low thyroid, but not low enough to qualify for the conventional diagnosis of hypothyroidism, can tax the body enough to put you at risk for coronary artery disease. This disorder can affect men and women, but is more common in women, especially as they age.
  24. Breathing in particulate matter. Just about everyone has heard that smoking is bad for your heart, but now research indicates that breathing polluted air full of particulate matter is not only bad for your lungs, but your heart as well. Experts recommend staying indoors when pollution is high and avoiding exercising in areas of high traffic.
  25. Lifting heavy weights. While weight lifting is definitely a healthy exercise as well as a popular one, but research has shown that lifting heavy weights raises blood pressure and can result in a serious risk for a torn aorta. Before you start a weight training program, visit your doctor to discover if you may be at risk. If you already participate in a weight training program, learn how to reduce your risk while still enjoying your activities.
