EARACHE, DEAFNESS, INFECTION AND SOFTENING OF THE WAX

EARACHE, DEAFNESS, INFECTION AND SOFTENING OF THE WAX
1. Pain in the ears is usually caused due to -Impacted wax;
2. Entry of some foreign body into the ear;
3. Due to an infection in the ear, nose or throat;
5. Due to some pressure changes when traveling in an airplane or in swimmers.

Children tend to be the usual sufferers because they commonly tend to suffer from respiratory tract infections and also because their Eustachian tubes are short and immature and thus the infection spreads easily. These can lead to severe infection and permanent damage if left untreated and thus should always be investigated by a doctor immediately. When a person complains of earache, ask him to sit propped up, stay away from wind and draft of cold air and apply a warm compress or indirect heat over the part (like through a hair drier or by application of a towel wrung out of hot water and pressed against the ear), or chew some gum and sip fluids to help open up the Eustachian tube and thus relieve the pain. It is important not to put anything into the ear unless and until a doctor ensures you that the eardrum is intact.

SOME HOME REMEDIES
WARNING:  Do not put any ear drops in the ear (allopathic, homoeopathic or home remedies mentioned below), if the ear drum is ruptured as this can cause severe complications.

Apricot - oil of apricot seeds is very effective in treating earache. Put 2-3 drops of oil in the ear that is paining. Earache will stop.

Betel leaf (pan) - The juice of fresh betel leaves is extracted and 2-3  drops are put in the painful ear to relieve earache.  This also helps in treating ear infection.

Bishop's weed (ajwain)-Ajwain possesses pain killing property and is very beneficial in treating earache. Take half teaspoonful of ajwain seeds and boil them in half cup of milk. Boil them till the essence of the seeds permeates the milk, then strain and use this milk as eardrops. It decreases congestion and relieves earache.

Bitter gourd (karela) - Cut two karelas lengthwise in small pieces and boil  them in mustard oil till the pieces turn into ash or black. Strain the oil and store in a bottle. Put 2-3 drops in the ears daily. Do this for a few weeks. The hearing will improve.

Black pepper - Soak a piece of cotton in oil and then sprinkle it with black pepper and place it over the ear.  This will bring instant relief to ear pain.

Bottle gourd (lauki) - Take the stalk of bottle gourd, crush it and extract the juice. Put 2-3 drops of this in the painful ear. The earache will stop immediately.

Breast milk - Instilling a few drops of breast milk is considered the best treatment in small children to treat mild earache.

Castor oil - A few drops of warm castor oil (arandi) or honey can be put in the ear to treat earache.

Clove (laung / lavang) - Heat 2-3 cloves in two teaspoonfuls of sesame oil. Then put a few drops of this warm oil in the painful ear. This will cure earache.

Garlic - Crush 2-3 cloves of garlic and heat them in some sesame oil or coconut oil till they turn brown. Do not use groundnut oil. Cool and strain. Put 2-3 drops of this oil in the painful ear. The earache will be cured. This will also benefit if there is pus oozing out from the ears. It also helps treat atonic deafness.

To treat earache and discharge from the ear arising from middle-ear infection, take a few cloves of garlic and crush them. Mix some rock salt in it and warm the mixture. Wrap this mixture in a muslin cloth and place it on the painful ear.  Simultaneously, chew 2-3 cloves of garlic daily for a few days.

To treat deafness, extract the juice of a few cloves of garlic and put 4-5 drops in the affected ear twice a day.

Ghee - Boil ghee and camphor (kapoor) and store it in a bottle. Whenever there is earache, warm it and put 2 – 3 drops in the painful ear with the help of a clean dropper. This will cure the earache.

Ginger - Freshly extracted ginger juice, about one tablespoonful, with an addition of a pinch of rock salt is filtered and then used as ear drops (2-3 drops) to relieve earache and inflammation.

Holy basil (tulsi) - Put 2-3 drops of juice of fresh tulsi leaves in the ear that is paining. Warm the juice slightly before putting it in the ear. This will bring relief to the earache and also cure any mild ear infection.

Honey - Honey is highly beneficial in the treatment of middle ear infection or infection of 'Otitis Media'. This disease is characterized by infection of the ear leading to pus discharge through perforated eardrum. Put 2 - 3 drops  of honey in the infected ear. This will drain out the pus and will help the ear to heal fast.

Linseed oil (alsi ka tel) - If the ears are paining,  put 2-3 drops of linseed oil in the ears with the help of a dropper. The earache will be cured.

Margosa (neem - bitter) - Margosa leaves are known to possess pain-killing property and steam fomentation of neem decoction brings quick relief to earache. Boil a handful of neem leaves in one litre of water and foment the painful ear with the steam that is emitted. This will give relief to earache.

To treat  boils in the ear, mix fresh juice of neem leaves with equal quantity of honey and warm it a little. Put a few drops in the ear that has boils. Do this regularly and it will bring relief to the boils. Margosa (neem) oil is also a useful instillation for inflammation and pain in the ears.

Mint (pudina) - Put 2-3 drops of juice of mint leaves in the ears to cure any sort of ear infection.

Olive oil – Warm a little Verbascum or olive oil and put 2-3 drops in the  painful  ear, this will help ease the pain and also soften the wax and aid its easy removal.

Onion - Take some raw onion juice and warm it. Put 2-3 drops in the ear that is paining. Do this twice a day. This will relieve the earache and also cure any sort of ear infection or ear inflammation. It is also beneficial if there is pus in the ears. It also loosens the wax in the ears, which can then be easily removed.

Poppy seeds (khus khus) - To treat inflammation of the ears, apply a paste of poppy seeds around the painful ear. It will bring relief.

Radish (mooli) - Mix the juice of radish leaves with sesame oil in equal quantities. Boil this mixture till only the oil is left in the pan. Cool it, filter it and store it in a glass bottle. Whenever there is pain in the ears, put 2-3 drops in the painful ear after warming it slightly. The earache will be cured.

Sesame oil (til ka tel) - Warm some  sesame oil  along with a couple of garlic cloves and put 2-3 drops in the ears. This will soften the wax in the ears, which can then be easily cleaned. This is also beneficial in treating earache.Drink a lot of water and increase the intake of dates, figs (anjeer) and fresh fruit juices.  This helps treat All these items should be put together.

In cases where the mother suffers from certain illnesses that can be transferable to the child through breast milk, it is better to put t he child off breast milk. Arresting the secretion of milk in such a mother is of prime importance. The following are some of the measures that can be used:

1. To check  excessive secretion of milk, apply a paste of turmeric and dhatoora (thorn apple) leaves for thirty minutes over the breasts.

2. Apply layers of hot betel leaves over the breasts for 10-15 minutes twice a day for a few weeks.

HOME REMEDIES TO IMPROVE THE FLOW OF MILK

HOME REMEDIES TO IMPROVE THE FLOW OF MILK

The usual causes of decreased milk secretion are-stress, emotional disturbances, worries, lack of sleep, etc. The following are some of the home remedies that help to promote the secretion of milk from the mammary glands in a nursing mother:
1. Alfalfa-Alfalfa is taken as sprouts or in tea or the juice of fresh leaves of alfalfa is taken with carrot juice, half cup daily in the morning.

2. Almonds-Eating four almonds in the morning that have been soaked overnight helps to improve the flow.

CRACKS ON THE SOLES OF THE FEET

CRACKS ON THE SOLES OF THE FEET

The skin of the soles can crack when they dry up and leave painful slits that occasionally bleed if the cracks are deep. These cracks are ugly to look at. The cracks usually occur on the heel and between the toes and if the spot gets infected, they become very painful and suppurate. Women who wear open-backed high-heeled shoes and those who walk bare feet throughout the day are more prone to these kinds of cracks.

HOME REMEDIES
1. Soak the feet in warm water twice daily for twenty minutes and then pat them dry.
2. The soles are massaged with sesame or castor oil (arandi) and hot water fomentation is done.
3. Oil from the shell of cashewnut is applied locally.
4. Juice of unripe mango or mango leaves is used as a dressing.

IRRITATION IN THE EYE

IRRITATION IN THE EYE
Irritation of the eye can result from presence of a foreign particle in the eye or due to straining the eye for long. If you are wearing contact lenses, take them out immediately. Do not itch or rub the eyes vigorously since that will only increase the itching and the irritation and lead to further complications. Press gently on the inner corner of the eye towards the nose and at the same time draw the outer corner downwards; this will make the tears flow and wash the foreign substance towards the inner corner, from where it can be easily removed. If the irritation persists for long or if it is associated with watering from the eyes and redness of the eyes, it is better to get it checked by an ophthalmologist as soon as possible.

HOME REMEDIES
1. First of all wash the eye with cold water and then apply a cold compress over the eyes, made by wetting a small gauze-piece with cold water. This compress should be used as frequently as possible and for as long as possible.

2. Splash cool water in the eye till the time the irritation decreases and if it doesn't go, then a few drops of rosewater can be instilled in both the eyes.

3. One drop of ghee or honey in each eye is a good cleanser.

4. In cases of burning in the eye, first rinse it with cool water as described above and then rinse the eye with tea after allowing it to cool upto room temperature. The eyes should then be covered with cold, wet tea bags. The tannic acid in the tea bags will soothe and cool down the itch and the irritation. Wrap the teabags with paper towels to avoid any staining of the eyelid.

5. The eyes can also be covered with slices of raw potato (which help draw the toxins out of the eyes) until the pain reduces.

Tips for Gaining Weight- the HEALTHY Way

Tips for Gaining Weight- the HEALTHY Way
Gaining weight should be “simple.”  Eat more calories than you expend and you’re sure to gain weight, right?  Gaining weight in a healthy way, though, can be a bit more challenging.  Here are 11 steps to help you assure that you are doing what’s best for you and your body as you pursue your weight gain goals.

1.  Set attainable goals.  Face it, very few people are destined to appear on the cover of a fitness magazine.  Our body shape and size is determined primarily by genetics and secondly by our lifestyle.  Healthy weight gain is a slow process that requires patience and realistic goal-setting.

2.  Eat breakfast.  Every day.  A well balanced breakfast is an excellent way to wake up your metabolism and your appetite.  Make sure you have a grain, some protein, and a fruit to start your day.  Try a yogurt berry parfait with granola OR a bagel sandwich with eggs & cheese and some juice.  In a hurry?  Grab a fruit smoothie OR cereal with milk and
berries.

3.  Follow basic nutrition recommendations.  Contrary to popular belief, living on fast food, pizza, and milkshakes is not the best approach to weight gain.  Although these foods can be incorporated into your meal plan, be sure to balance them with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and a variety of protein sources, such as meat, nuts, beans, and dairy.

4.  Plan to eat 5-6 times/ day, at least.  Prevent excessive fullness by eating reasonable portions spread throughout the entire day.  Plan to have 3-4 meals each day with several snacks in between.  At the end of the day, your “energy in” must be greater than your “energy out” in order to gain weight.

5.  Vary your diet, especially the protein.  Eating the same foods every day can be boring.  Get creative and try something new.  Start with a variety of protein sources: cheese, nuts, beef, fish, yogurt, pork, beans, chicken, yogurt, turkey, cottage cheese, lamb, eggs, etc.

6.  Pack snacks to-go for extra calories.  Trail mix, granola bars, fruit with peanut butter, chips, dried fruit, veggies and dip, cheese and crackers, nuts, smoothies, sunflower seeds, and cookies are portable options that can help you keep up with your needs throughout the day.  Cereal with milk, ice cream, and hot chocolate can be great snacks to end your day.

7.  Choose caloric beverages.  You’re going to drink something, so pick fluids with calories.  Juices, milk, and even an occasional soda (non-diet, of course) will do the trick.  Drink plenty of fluids that supply calories like juice, milk, milkshakes, and sports beverages. For example, drinking 1 quart of grape or cranberry juice supplies 1000 calories. 1 quart of 2% milk supplies 720 calories.

8.  Consider high-calorie nutritional supplements.  Energy-dense, high-quality nutrition can be hard to come by, but Ensure Plus, Boost Plus, and Carnation Instant Breakfast provide quick and easy calories with the added bonus of vitamins and minerals.  Consider using these products as your “nutrition medicine” on the days you’re not feeling hungry, but know you still need to eat.

9.  Balance cardio, flexibility, and strength-training exercises.  Exercise, especially cardio work-outs, burns calories that you must replace by eating more.  However, it can help to stimulate your appetite and assure that you build an appropriate amount of muscle.  3-5 days of physical activity each week can assure optimal outcomes.
(Note: Severe malnutrition can require a period of inactivity as the body heals and repairs.  Consultation with a medical provider and/or dietitian can help to establish a safe plan in these situations.)

10. Get regular sleep
The human body needs adequate rest in order to “keep up.”  On average, most people need 8 hours of sleep/ night.  However, some people function well on 6 hours/night while others need 10+ hr/ night to feel fully rested.  Bottom line, listen to your body and get the sleep you need.

11. Set realistic goals
Genetic factors can play a large role in physique. You are not going to look like Arnold if your parents look like Pee Wee Herman.

DARK CIRCLES UNDER THE EYES

DARK CIRCLES UNDER THE EYES
The skin under the eyes is very delicate and thin and the blood vessels close to the skin tend to occasionally become prominent and engorged and thus give a bluish tint to the skin. Dark circles can also be due to excessive pigmentation in that area. This is usually hereditary  or  can develop when the person is overtired and is not able to get proper sleep due to reasons like stress, anxiety  or it can occur due to disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, too much exposure to sunlight  or  due to excessive loss of weight.

SOME HOME REMEDIES
1. Drink a lot of water, atleast eight to ten glasses and also apply a cold-water compress over the closed eyes for about five to ten minutes, several times daily.

2. Eat a lot of fresh raw vegetables, salads and fruits.

3. The cream of milk  or  malai with the addition of a few drops of rose water in it should be applied locally with the help of a thin and soft cloth over the area.

4. Applying thin slices  or  grated cucumber,  potato  or  papaya over the eyes helps to give a cool and refreshing effect and helps reduce the dark circles.

5. Application of almond oil  or  vitamin E oil over the dark circles kept overnight tends to help a lot.

How to identify your Skin Type - THE TISSUE TEST

How to identify your Skin Type - THE TISSUE TEST

THE TISSUE TEST
Wash your face with a neutral (not made for a particular skin type) soap or cleanser (such as Neutrogena for normal skin). Rinse with water. Pat try with a towel just enough to absorb moisture do not rub. Wait one hour, and then blot your entire face with one ply (or layer) of a large facial tissue. Press lightly all over your face and leave for about one minute. Then remove the paper carefully and examine it near a window or a light.
What do you see?
1. If you see oil throughout the tissue, you most likely have oily skin.
2.If you see oil only in the Tzone (across forehead, down nose and chin), you most likely have combination skin.
3. If you see very little oil throughout, you most likely have normal skin.
4. If you see no sign of oil at all, you most likely have dry skin.
5. If your skin feels irritated or slightly itchy, you most likely have sensitive skin.

You’ll need to perform this test several times a year-during spring, summer and winter because your skin changes with the seasons.

Enhance beauty with the mudpack

Enhance beauty with the mudpack
The nature cure practitioners at present are making increasing use of mud packs of moistened earth in the treatment of diseases. The use of mud packs has been found highly beneficial and effective in the treatment of chronic inflammation caused by internal diseases, bruises, sprains, boils and wounds. Mud packs have been found to be a valuable treatment of diseases relating to general weakness or nervous disorders. It can also bring down fever and is beneficial in the treatment of scarlet fever, measles and influenza. The mud pack is prescribed for swellings, eye and ear troubles, gout, rheumatism, stomach troubles, kidney and liver malfunctions, diphtheria, neuralgia, sexual disorders, headache, toothache and general aches and pains. This mode of treatment is normally adopted in conjunction with a proper scheme of dietary and other natural therapies.

The advantage of mud treatment is that it is able to retain moisture and coolness for longer periods than cold water packs or compresses. The cold moisture in the mud packs relaxes the pores of the skin, draws the blood into the surface, relieves inner congestion and pain, promotes heat radiation and elimination of morbid matter. A mud pack is prepared with clay obtained from about ten cm below the surface of the earth, after ensuring that it does not contain any impurities such as compost or pebbles. The clay is then made into a smooth paste with warm water. This is allowed to cool and then spread on a strip of cloth, the size of which may vary according to requirements. The dimensions of the pack  meant for application on the abdomen are generally 20 cm x 10 cm x 2.5 cm for adults. The mud bandage, after being placed on the body, should be covered with flannel or other protective material. The pack is applied for 10 to 30 minutes.

Hot and cold applications are useful in relieving chronic pains, intestinal cramps and lumbago.Alternate application helps to relieve discomfort caused by flatulence and intestinal obstructions.
It is also helpful in amoebiasis, colitis, enteritis and other inflammatory conditions of bacterial origin.

Use the mud bath to remove impurities

Use the mud bath to remove impurities
The mud or clay bath is another mode of the nature cure. It is applied in the same way as mud packs, but only on a larger scale on the entire body.

In this, mud or clay is first ground and sifted to remove all impurities, and then made into a smooth paste mixed with hot water. The paste is then spread on a sheet that in turn is wrapped round the body. One or two blankets are then wrapped over this, depending on the temperature of the room and that of the pack. A mud bath is followed with a cleansing warm water bath and a short cold shower.

The mud bath is found to tone up the skin by increasing the circulation and energising the skin tissues. Frequent mud baths help to improve the complexion, clear spots and patches on the skin following skin disorders or due to smallpox. It is very beneficial in the treatment of skin diseases like psoriasis, leucoderma and every leprosy. This bath is also valuable in getting relief from rheumatic pain or pain in the joints caused by injuries.

The duration of the bath should be from 30 minutes to one hour. Care should also be  taken to avoid the patient catching a chill during the bath. Mud applications also form a vital part of natural beauty treatment.

The Miraculous“Baobab”Tree

The Miraculous“Baobab”Tree
Family: Bombacaceae
Scientific name: Adansonia digitata L.
Common names : African baobab, baobab, monkey bread tree, Ethiopian sour gourd, cream of tartar tree, upside down tree (English) Baobab, arbre aux calebasses, arbre de mille ans, calebassier du Sénégal (French). Local names include: mbuyu (Swahili), mwamba (Kamba). olimisiera (Maasail, toega (Moon,), Sira (Bambara). mramba (Kiparc), isimuhu (Zulu) .

African baobab occurs naturally in semiarid regions of tropical Africa, including most countries south of the Sahara except Liberia, Uganda, Djibouti, Burundi and the Central African Republic. In Chad, it is found only in the west, and in South Africa it is mostly limited to the Transvaal. It is found in diverse ecosystems including coastal areas of both eastern and western Africa. The northern limit of its range is where semi-desert scrubland begins. In the east, from Eritrea to Mozambique, it is typically found in the lowlands, but it occurs in the Nuba Mountains in Sudan. In Tanzania it also occurs on upland plateaus that have otherwise been cleared for cultivation. It occurs in the woodland in Namibia, as a component of savannah ecosystems throughout Zimbabwe and northern South Africa and in both ecosystem types in Angola.

The African baobab is an extremely important indigenous fruit tree species for humans and animals in the dry areas of Africa. It offers shelter and provides food, fibre and medicine,as well as raw materials for many purposes. The white pulp is rich in vitamin C and used for making juice. The roasted seeds are very nutritious, rich in proteins and fats and this socioeconomically important species is essential in the local diet.

Leaves are used fresh as a leafy vegetable or are sun dried, milled and sieved to produce a green powder used as a flavouring agent in sauces in many parts of Africa.  Leaves, fruit and seeds are collected and sold by many households to local companies.

The fruit pulp is either eaten fresh or added to cooked gruels. Avoiding cooking the fruit pulp preserves the vitamins in it. The pulp is also mixed with water or milk to make a drink or used as a supplement mixed with staple foods such as corn meal and cassava. Seeds and kernels are widely used, despite the thick hard shell to thicken soups, but they are also fermented and used for flavouring or roasted and eaten as snacks. The baobab tree also provides fibre from the bark, used for making rope, fodder for livestock (leaves) and medicinal products made from various parts of the tree and used to treat a variety of medical problems. Leaf extracts are very effective against dysentery. They are also diuretic, diaphoretic, tonic and generally used against fever, diarrhoea, dysentery, colic, lumbago or ophthalmia, Guinea worm and urinary tract infections. They are also effective in the treatment of asthma. Plants constitute an alternative source of proteins in the human diet, with advantages over animal proteins because of their low content of saturated fats and absence of cholesterol.

The leaves, bark and fruit of African baobab are used as food and medicinal purposes in many parts of Africa. The leaves are an excellent source of protein, containing all the essential amino acids, as well as most of the non essential amino acids. The fruit pulp is particularly rich in vitamin C ,calcium and iron .

The roots are used as a tonic indicated for the treatment of malaria. The fruit pulp is used in healing and strengthening children, treating diarrhoea, dysentery and inflammation of the intestine and liver. The seeds are used in the treatment of dental caries, gingivitis, malaria, measles and gastritis. The sap is given to stop tooth decay. The gum used as a disinfectant for wounds and in the treatment of toothache.

DISEASES OF THE EAR

DISEASES OF THE EAR
EARACHE, DEAFNESS, INFECTION AND SOFTENING OF THE WAX

Pain in the ears is usually caused due to

Impacted wax;
Entry of some foreign body into the ear;
Due to an infection in the ear, nose or throat;

Donkey Milk: The fitness secret

Donkey Milk: The fitness secret
Equus africanus asinus
Equidae or horse family

There are several alternatives to cows' milk that are available on the market for human consumption, such as soy milk, almond milk and goats' milk, but there is one healthy source of milk that is often overlooked: the donkey. Perhaps this source of milk should not be ignored; a new study shows that people who drink donkeys' milk instead of cows' milk gain less weight.

Donkeys' milk may have several healthful properties, including being a good source of calcium, protein and omega 3 fatty acids. Omega 3 fatty acids are essential nutrients that are beneficial to cardiovascular and nervous system health.

Many people do not get enough calcium in their diets when they cut out dairy products, so if someone needs to stop drinking cows' milk, donkeys' milk may be a viable alternative as a calcium source. The protein in donkeys' milk can help a person keep their energy levels high throughout the day and stay satiated for a longer time after a meal.

Donkeys' milk may be more healthy from a "heart-healthy" cardiovascular standpoint than cows' milk. A study in rats also showed that rats consuming donkeys' milk instead of cows' milk on a regular basis had lower blood triglyceride (fat) levels; this is linked to a lower risk of developing cardiovascular disease. These rats also had a faster and more efficient metabolism than rats that were regularly supplemented with cows' milk. Rats are actually omnivores with a similar diet to humans, so they make good animal models for dietary studies.

While non-animal alternatives to cows' milk such as soy milk are healthy for people to consume, some people do not like the taste, which is quite different from cows' milk. Goats' milk can be made into dairy products, like cheese, but goats' cheese has a very strong taste. Donkeys' milk is still dairy and it can be processed into foods such as cheese.

For people who are allergic to cows' milk, donkeys' milk is a safe animal milk alternative. The main downside of drinking donkeys' milk is that it is harder to come by and more expensive than cows' milk. Donkeys are smaller animals than cows and they produce about ten times less milk than a cow does. The supply of donkeys' milk may be lower, but the health benefits of donkeys' milk over cows' milk make donkeys' milk an alternative worth trying.

It is said that Cleopatra, Queen of Ancient Egypt, took baths in asses’ milk to preserve the beauty and youth of her skin. Legend has it that no less than 700 asses were needed to provide the quantity of milk necessary for her daily bath. This was also the case of Poppaea Sabina (30 – 65), second wife of Roman Emperor Nero, who is referred to in Pliny’s description of the asses’ milk virtues for the skin:

It is generally believed that asses' milk effaces wrinkles in the face, renders the skin more delicate, and preserves its whiteness : and it is a well-known fact, that some women are in the habit of washing their face with it seven times daily, strictly observing that number. Poppaea, the wife of the Emperor Nero, was the first to practise this; indeed, she had sitting-baths, prepared solely with asses' milk, for which purpose whole troops of she- asses used to attend her on her journeys.

Pauline Bonaparte (1780–1825), Napoleon’s sister, is also reported to have used asses’ milk for her skin’s health care.

The Benefits of Argan Oil

The Benefits of Argan Oil
Known by the Moroccan Berber community as the "Tree of Life", the Argan tree (Argania spinosa) has supported the people of these arid regions and their livestock for centuries. The leaves and fruit sustain goats, camels and sheep. Cattle live off the press-cake that remains after the oil has been extracted; humans eat the oil and the nut shells are used for fuel. Argan oil is produced from the kernels of the tree and is one of the rarest and most expensive oils in the world. Berber women have used Argan oil for centuries to protect and nourish their skin, hair and nails from the harsh conditions in which they live. Now Argan oil is gaining popularity as a "miracle ingredient" in the Western beauty product industry. It has extremely high levels of Vitamin E and 80% fatty acids which make it perfect for healing many skin ailments as well as protecting against premature aging caused by oxidation.

Healing and Protecting
The active substances called triterpenoids that occur in Argan Oil offer amazing skin protection benefits. These include tissue healing (scars), anti-inflammatory, sun-protective and disinfectant properties. The oil contains 80% unsaturated fatty acids and is more resistant to oxidation than olive oil. Argan oil also contains 0.8% unsaponifiables (a large group of compounds also known as plant sterols or sterolins). Sterolins improve skin metabolism, reduce inflammation and promote excellent moisture retention.

Anti-aging
Argan is considered an effective anti-aging oil due to properties such as the high levels of vitamin E /tocopherols (anti-oxidants help neutralise free radical damage, which is important for skin exposed to polluted Western environments) and saponins (skin-softening agents). Besides cooling and soothing inflammation, it is also reputed to help reduce wrinkles by restoring the skin`s hydro-lipid layer.

Medicinal Properties
1. Argan oil contains rare plant sterols (schottenol and spinasterol), not found in other oils. It is believed that these phytosterols are unique in their combination and that there are no other vegetable oils with a comparable phytosterol composition. In general phytosterols reduce inflammation and help block cholesterol absorption from the intestines. They also show anti-cancer properties.

2. Argan oil facilitates digestion by increasing the concentration of pepsin in the gastric juice. It contains flavonoids that act as a natural anti-inflammatory both internally and externally.

3. The oil is considered highly beneficial for arthritic or rheumatic conditions.

4. It is helpful for lowering cholesterol levels, stimulating circulation and strengthening the body`s natural immunity.

5. It is used to soothe skin ailments like chickenpox, acne, psoriasis, and dry eczema. It is also used to prevent stretch marks during pregnancy.

6. Traditionally Argan oil is also reputed to have aphrodisiac and tonic properties.

Damiana - The Aphrodisiac Herb

Damiana - The Aphrodisiac Herb
Turnera diffusa
Passifloraceae
Damiana (Turnera diffusa) flourishes in hot, humid regions in Central America, South America, and Texas. This herb is a relatively small shrub that produces small, yellow, aromatic flowers. It blossoms in early to late summer and is followed by fruits that taste very similarly to figs. The shrub is said to have an odor somewhat like chamomile or Cannabis sativa, due to the essential oils present in the plant. The deep green leaves are harvested just after flowering in late summer.

The leaves are used medicinally today, and in the past by many native cultures, to treat a variety of disorders. It was introduced to the United States in 1874, and was used by Eclectic doctors at that time. The ancient Mayan civilization utilized Damiana leaf as a traditional aphrodisiac, and the people of Central America where the Mayan civilization was based utilize it to this day.

Damiana is a central nervous system tonic with benefits for the reproductive organs. It stimulates the production of the male hormone testosterone. It is often used by women for hormone balancing, hot flashes, infertility and menopause. Damiana is used for both frigidity in women and impotence in men. Thus it is used for lowered libido and/or depression. It is recommended for use when a person has unbalanced nervous anxiety. It may stimulate fertility by increasing sperm count in men and strengthening the ovum in women.

As an herbal tonic and possible aphrodisiac, Damiana is considered very valuable for its stimulatory action, as well for its reputation to restore sexual vitality to the body. Less known is its restorative tonic ability and its use to soothe and tone the nervous system. It is considered a warm and spicy herb, or in Chinese medicine a Yang tonic. Famed herbalist Rosemary Gladstar includes it in her list of favorite longevity herbs, claiming that this herb restores vitality, stimulates dreams and tones the nervous system.

In Mexico, it can be seen used as a substitute for tea leaves with its slightly bitter principle while it is also used as a flavoring agent for a variety of liqueurs. A mild sensation of euphoria is sometimes believed to be induced in a person using higher doses of Damiana. Consumption of the leaves is known to have a minor laxative effect, while the use of high doses of the leaves may cause the stools of the patient to loosen considerably.

Making a tea with the leaves is one of the best ways to enjoy this herb. The tea should be consumed 30 minutes before the effects will be experienced. To make a tea: take 1oz of Damiana leaf and pour 1 pint (16oz) of hot boiling water over the herb and steep for 10-15 minutes. Strain and add honey if desired. Up to three cups per day.  Have fun!

Dew Of The Sea - ROSEMARY

Dew Of The Sea - ROSEMARY
Family: Lamiaceae (Labiatae)
Latin Name: Rosmarinus officinalis
Part of Plant Used: Leaves
Use: culinary, landscaping, crafts

The genus name Rosmarinus derives from the Latin words ros and marinus which together translate to “dew of the sea.” Rosemary has been used since the time of the early Greeks and Romans. Greek scholars often wore a garland of the herb on their heads to help their memory during examinations. In the ninth century, Charlemagne insisted that the herb be grown in his royal gardens. The Eau de Cologne that Napoleon Bonaparte used was made with rosemary. The herb was also the subject of many poems and was mentioned in five of Shakespeare’s plays.

Myths and Folklore: A sprig of rosemary was often placed in the hands of the deceased at a funeral because it is a symbol of remembrance. Brides often wore rosemary at their weddings because it was also a symbol of happiness, loyalty and love. Legend has it that rosemary originally had white flowers which were changed to blue ones when the virgin Mary placed her cloak upon it while resting during her flight to Egypt.

Health Benefits: Once again, we have an herb with some excellent health properties.

1. Like the volatile oils of other herbs, Oil of Rosemary is considered a carminitive and nervine, stimulating digestion and helping the nervous system, respectively.  Because rosemary stimulates the brain and nervous system, some say that it can cure headaches.

2. If you combine dried rosemary leaves and flowers with borax, then use the mixture as a shampoo, you may be able to avoid Rogaine as rosemary is touted for its ability to stimulate the hair-bulbs.

3. Rosemary Wine, made by pouring white wine over chopped green sprigs and straining after a few days, supposedly helps with a weak heart palpitation and stimulates the kidneys as well.

4. Other infusions - Hungary water, Rosemary Tea - are claimed to help with gout, colic, headaches, and nervous diseases.  Supposedly, you can also smoke Rosemary and

5. Coltsfoot together to help with asthma.  That brings new meaning to smoking some herb.

6. Add a drop of Rosemary to your shampoo each day (put shampoo in hand, then add a drop or two) to keep your hair looking marvelous.

7. Add a drop of Rosemary to some water and then wash your face -it gets rid of blemishes and helps keep your skin looking youthful.

8. Is your nose stuffed up?  Put a drop of Rosemary on your hands, rub together, and then inhale.  Mmmm, smells good and helps clear the stuffy nose.

9. Invigorates you on those low energy days.  Add a drop or two to your diffuser.

10. Diffuse Rosemary (or just sniff the bottle every now and then) when you’re studying to help increase memory retention and ward off mental fatigue.

11. Cooking meats at high temperatures may create carcinogenic compounds.  But, a recent study (reported March 2008) has shown that Rosemary may minimize those compounds.  So, cook with your Rosemary essential oil, or just take some after a meal to help protect yourself.

12. Rosemary is effective for parasites, fungi and, therefore, candida.
